WHITE HOUSE COULD FACE CONTEMPT
Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Patrick Leahy says he is willing
to take the president to court if the White House refuses to comply
with congressional subpoenas. The Bush Administration indicated last
week that it will invoke executive privilege to keep two former White
House officials from testifying under oath as part of the
congressional investigation into the dismissals of 8 US attorneys. The
Chairmen of the Senate and House Judiciary Committees have given the
White House until July 9th to provide a legal basis for its lack of
cooperation with the subpoenas. If the sides do not reach an
agreement, the matter could proceed to the courts.
