ETHIOPIAN TROOPS LAUNCH SECURITY CRACKDOWN IN MOGADISHU
Heavy fighting has erupted on the streets of Mogadishu as Ethiopian
troops carry out what they say is a 3 day operation to secure the
Somali capital. Ethiopian helicopters bombed a Mogadishu market today
and tanks have reportedly fired mortars in various parts of the
restive city. Insurgents have responded with automatic rifle fire and
rocket propelled grenades. Civilians have been left stranded in
different points of the city and dozens have been hospitalized. The
situation in Mogadishu has been deteriortating by the week and tens of
thousands have fled the city since the begining of February.

UK SUSPENDS BUSINESS RELATIONS WITH IRAN
A diplomatic crisis provoked by the capture of 15 British sailors by
Iranian forces has deepened. The British government today announced
that it has suspended bi-lateral business relations with Iran until
significant progress is made on the release of the navy personnel. The
sailors were captured at sea on Friday. Iran claims they were in
Iranian territorial waters while Britain says satellite images prove
the patrol boat was 1.7 nautical miles within the boundary of Iraqi
waters.

WAR SPENDING DEBATE
The Senate today resumed it's debate on a 122 billion dollar war funding bill. The measure includes a suggested timeline for troop withdrawal by next March. The timeline is the Democrat's way of bringing the troops home, but this evening they will vote on a crucial amendment offered by Republican Senator Thad Cochran of Mississippi that would strip the timeline from the bill. The spending bill also includes money for the war in Afghanistan, hurricane Katrina recovery, farming assistance, and an increase to the minimum wage.

POWER SHARING DEAL ANNOUNCED FOR NORTHERN IRELAND
Rival groups in Northern Ireland's longtime civil conflict today signed a historic power-sharing agreement. The protestant pro-British Democratic Unionist Party and the mostly Catholic Irish nationalist Sinn Fein will form a joint executive on May 8th. The power-sharing deal agreed to today was the centerpiece of the Good Friday peace accord, signed nearly 10 years ago.
TAMIL TIGERS CONDUCT FIRST EVER AIR RAID
Sri Lankan Tamil Tiger rebels carried out their first air raid early this morning, bombing a main military base and forcing the temporary closure of the island's only international airport. FSRN's Ponniah Manikavasagam has more.
