At least 800 Shiite Iraqi's died today during a stampede on a bridge over the Tigris River. The crowds were traveling to a religious ceremony in Northern Baghdad when people started frantically running because of rumors that a suicide bomber was about to detonate a bomb. People were trampled over while others began jumping over the bridge into the river. Eventually the bridge fell. Many of the dead are women and children. The Shiites were celebrating the martyr Musa Al-Kadhim, a religious symbol among Shiites.

Prime Minister Ibrahim Jafaari declared three days of national mourning for the dead. The stampede comes as tensions between different religious groups are high amidst disagreements over the Iraqi constitution.

Tony Blair faces increased criticism today after a high level letter leaked to the media revealed that part of his own government warned him more than a year ago that the invasion in Iraq was fuelling Muslim extremism in Britain.  From London, Naomi Fowler reports.

An immigration hearing for alleged terrorist and former CIA agent, Luis Posada Carriles, began today in El Paso. Although the US has not prosecuted Carriles for his involvement in the mid-air bombing of a Cuban commercial plane in 1976 that killed 73 people and hotel bombings in Havana, the immigration hearing will decide his migratory status. Meanwhile protestors want Carriles extradited to his country of origin, Venezuela.  Dolores M. Bernal has more from El Paso, Texas.

Seventeen people, fourteen of them children, died in a Paris fire in an apartment complex housing African immigrant families. The fire raises criticism of the lack of low-income housing in the French capital. Tony Cross reports from Paris.

Pakistan’s local elections have been racked in violence. At least ten people have been killed in the second phase of Pakistan’s council elections. Elections are crucial to President Pervez Musharraf for several reasons. The outcome will give insight on if he should win the presidential election next year. They also give the opportunity for Musharraf to prove his effectiveness in cracking down on Islamic violence in his country. In the first round of elections held last week, 20 people were killed and thousands protested the outcome, saying it was rigged.

The evacuation of all 21 settlements in Gaza and 4 in the West Bank is complete. Israel’s Army Chief, Lt. Gen. Dan Halutz, said bulldozing Of the settlements will take 10 days followed by a military pull out. He said he expects Gaza to be in complete control of the Palestinians by September. Israel’s Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said Israel will maintain control of the remainder Of the West Bank. Palestinians hope to also recover control of the West Bank.

European Union negotiating countries have called off nuclear incentives talks with Iran that were scheduled for August 31st. Helene Papper has more.
